Public discussion on a proposed revision of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes

The Editorial Board for the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP) has compiled proposed revisions of the ICNP. As outlined previously (Oren et al., Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 2021;71:004598; https://doi.org/10.1099/ijsem.0.004598) and to comply with Articles 13(b)(4) and 4(d) of the statutes of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes, a public discussion of the document will start on 1 July 2021, to last for 6 months. Here, we present the procedure for this discussion.

The Editorial Board of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes here explains the proposed procedure towards the production of the next revision of the Prokaryotic Code, to include public discussion of a draft version, to be prepared by the editors, followed by balloting of the members of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes.

In this article we argue that freedom of speech should be understood as a social freedom. In the public discussion after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, it has often been understood as an absolute right to say anything – to offend, to make a fool of others and of oneself, and to express any opinion regardless of the consequences. We challenge this view and propose that advocating freedom of speech without understanding its social foundations is misleading and counterproductive. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelemme sitä, millaisena ja miten tekoäly esitetään suomalaisessa julkisessa keskustelussa, ja ketkä tekoälystä suurelle yleisölle kertovat. Aineistona olemme käyttäneet Yleisradion verkkosivujen tekoälyä käsitteleviä artikkeleja. Tulosten perusteella tekoälystä pääsevät kertomaan useimmin talouden ja teollisuuden aloilla työskentelevät miehet. Aineistossa esiintyneet tekoälytulevaisuuskuvaukset pitäytyvät pitkälti nykyisen länsikeskeisen kapitalistisen maailmankuvan sisällä. Artikkelissa tutkitaan lapsille suunnattujen kaupunkiympäristöjen ja erityisesti ohjattujen leikkikenttien kehittymistä 1970-luvun Helsingissä. Lasten ympäristöjä ja niiden suunnitteluun vaikuttaneita lapsikäsityksiä tarkastellaan kolmen tason, rakennetun ympäristön, leikkikenttien arjen ja hyvinvointivaltion viitekehyksen kautta. Tutkimusaineistona on käytetty suunnitteludokumentteja, lapsista ja kaupunkiympäristöistä käytyä asiantuntijakeskustelua, sanomalehtikirjoituksia sekä entisten leikkikenttätoimijoiden kanssa tehtyjä haastatteluja.
